🏚️ A FOUNDATION OF TRAGEDY

The building stands above the site workings connected to the 1857 Lundhill Colliery Disaster, where an underground explosion claimed the lives of 189 men and boys.

They weren’t alone.

Dozens of pit ponies—along with dogs used in the mine—were also lost as fire tore through the tunnels, turning the workings into an inescapable furnace.

Today, the structure itself shows signs of movement. Cracks run through the walls, subtle but persistent—as though the building is slowly sinking into the past beneath it.

Many believe it’s not just the ground that’s unsettled.

Death did not remain below ground.

Accounts—both documented and passed down—suggest that several visitors met sudden ends inside the bank itself:

• Two individuals reportedly suffered fatal strokes while conducting business

• One collapsed at the counter from a heart attack

• 1941 – During the Sheffield Blitz, the building sustained damage. Etched into the plaster above is the date “1941,” believed to have been left by those who repaired it during wartime

History didn’t pass this place by. It pressed itself into the walls.

The top floor tells a very different story.

Now restored, it contrasts sharply with the lower levels—showing both Victorian comfort and the stark reality of a miner’s living space.

But this is also where many report something they cannot explain:

A dragging sound.

With multiple recorded accidents on the steep staircase, some believe the energy here is tied to falls… or something being pulled.

Found at the bottom of the stairs with a fractured skull. Officially ruled an accident.

• 1915 – John William Mason

Bank manager, died at his desk aged 55 following a heart attack.

• 1915 – Mary Fisher

A young maid who passed away in her room on the top floor from pneumonia.

• 1940 – The Night Watchman

Suffered a fatal stroke while on duty during wartime. His identity remains unknown.
